Match the closing reading to the right date
Write down the move-out, switch or account-closure date and the final meter reading you gave the supplier. Compare those details with the final bill period and mark whether each reading is actual, customer-provided or estimated.
Separate charges from payments and credit
A final bill can include energy charges for the closing period, standing charges, earlier adjustments and payments already made. Check the charge period separately from the account balance so a payment or credit is not mistaken for a new energy charge.
Check the refund question without assuming a deadline
If the account appears to be in credit, ask the former supplier how the closing balance was calculated and what information it still needs. A credit balance, a final bill and a refund process are related but are not automatically the same outcome.
Keep a compact evidence record
Save the final bill, closing reading, meter photograph if you have one, payment history and messages with the supplier. If the figures do not line up, write one focused question with the dates and numbers the supplier should explain.
Use the checker when the timeline is unclear
The Energy Money Checker can help organise the dates, readings and unanswered questions. It cannot promise a refund or replace a current supplier explanation.
Common questions
Is a final bill the same as a refund statement?
No. The final bill explains the closing account calculation; a refund depends on the resulting balance, payments and the supplier’s process.
What should I keep when I move or switch?
Keep the closing date, meter reading, reading type, photograph if available, final bill and payment or refund correspondence.
