Describe what has stopped working

Check whether the fixed meter display works, whether the in-home display updates, whether the supplier receives readings and whether the bill shows estimates. “Not working” can describe different problems.

Do safe checks only

Check power or batteries for an in-home display and record any message shown. Do not remove covers, change wiring or attempt to repair the meter or communications equipment.

If the smart meter has stopped sending readings

A meter can continue recording usage while its communications link or supplier data feed is interrupted. Check the supplier account for the last received reading and the date, then ask how to provide a manual reading while the communication problem is investigated.

Check whether billing is affected

A display problem does not by itself show that the meter has stopped measuring. Compare the bill’s readings and dates, and use the estimated-bill guide if the account is no longer receiving actual readings.

Contact the supplier with a useful record

Give the supplier the symptom, date, meter or display involved and any reference already received. Keep the response and ask how you can provide readings while the issue is investigated.
